Lobos is the only Fuerteventura’s island, lying about 2 km from north-eastern Fuerteventura’s coast, just across Corralejo. It is not permanently inhabited but makes a great day trip if you’re after swimming in the crystal clear ocean, hiking an easy volcano with great views of Corralejo and its sand dunes, or just chilling in its picturesque “puertito”.
Lobos Island is one of the first protected natural reserves of the Canary Islands, declared as a natural park “Dunas de Corralejo e Islote de Lobos” in 1982 already. Although it’s not allowed to spend a night there, it’s still a great place for a day or even a half-day (family) trip from Corralejo. To get there, catch a motorboat (a rib) in Corralejo port (tickets are sold in those small houses along the coast) and follow your bliss. You can spend a day on the beautiful sandy beach (Playa la Concha), hike up the volcano Montaña La Caldera for a great view of Corralejo and its sand dunes (please mind that restriction may apply regarding hiking the volcano due to birds nesting), take a walk around the island (around 2 hrs, you’ll also see salt pans and the lighthouse along the way), learn more about the island and its name at the info center, or just hang around the small “puertito” bay with shallow turquoise water and a delicious sea-food restaurant (make a lunch reservation after arrival, they usually don’t take walk-ins).
PS. Think about when you’ll wish to come back to Corralejo, since you’ll already be asked to book your place on the returning boat when buying the ticket to Lobos!
