A hike to Calderon Hondo volcano

This is your introductory active hiking experience, thoughtfully designed to give you a warm and unforgettable first impression of this unique volcanic island.
I’ll l pick you up at your place in the morning and we’ll take a 20-minute drive to Lajares, a cozy, landlocked town between Corralejo and El Cotillo, with many shops, good restaurants, and trendy bars. We’ll first stop at one of them for a breakfast, but we’ll be on the mission to hike Calderon Hondo, a big “must” for everyone coming to Fuerteventura. Considered to be the most accessible and easy-to-climb volcano, it’s also the one with an intact, fully-preserved crater. This is an excellent opportunity if you haven’t seen a volcano crater before. From the top are great views of northern Fuerteventura and, on clear days, Lanzarote Island.
It will take us around one and a half-hours of an easy hike up and down the volcano, with photo time included. On return (by car), we’ll take a gravel road through an impressive volcanic landscape, while learning about agave plants, lava fields and impressive history of this volcanic island.

Morning yoga at the beach

Join us for morning beach yoga sessions on Corralejo Beach, led by Tjaša, an experienced yoga teacher who focuses on gentle flow, yin yoga, breathwork, and mindfulness meditation. Her creative and fluid classes offer a smooth flow between poses, creating a meditative and physically engaging practice. Yoga mats are provided and disinfected after each session.
Please note that this is an outdoor class on a public beach, so we can’t control the weather or beach activity. The class starts at 9 a.m. sharp, and you should be there at least 5 minutes early. It’s a group session and not exclusive to the Active Holidays in Fuerteventura group.

A trip to Lobos Island with lunch

After the morning yoga, we’ll meet in Corralejo port, where you’ll board a motor boat for a short, 15 minutes ride to a nearby Lobos Island.
This day trip offers a diverse range of activities to choose from, such as snorkeling in crystal clear waters of the island’s rich marine reserve (the snorkeling equipment will be provided). You can also visit an information center and learn about the island’s history, or hike to the top of La Caldera Volcano for breathtaking panoramic views (also of Corralejo and Corralejo Dunes). Or, you can just relax on the pristine shores of La Concha Beach or stunningly blue lagoon. If you feel inspired for a walk, you can hike around the island and explore the salt pans and an old lighthouse on the northern side. At lunchtime, visit a tiny village with a local “old-school” restaurant, where you’ll have a pre-booked lunch with local fish or paella.
Lobos Island is one of the first protected natural reserves of the Canary Islands, already declared as a natural park “Dunas de Corralejo e Islote de Lobos” in 1982. Although it’s not allowed to spend a night there, it’s an excellent place for a day or even a half-day trip from Corralejo.

You’ll feel more connected during your stay, and you don’t need any prior knowledge – just bring your curiosity! A walk through the magical dunes with a photoshoot

After a hotel pick-up and a short, scenic drive, we’ll reach the heart of the beautiful Corralejo dunes. We’ll be met by a unique landscape where stunning views of turquoise waters and volcanic mountains frame golden dunes for another beautiful Fuerteventura hiking experience.
As we’ll walk through the tranquil natural park, I recommend that you take your shoes off, feel the soft, warm sand beneath your feet, and enjoy the peaceful, unspoiled environment. Perfect for nature lovers and photographers, a walk through Corralejo Dunes Natural Park is a must-do in Fuerteventura.
To give you an even more unforgettable experience, I asked Tjaša, our yoga teacher and photographer, to join and offer a quick photoshoot. You’ll get (at least) 5 professionally edited photos, which you can use on social media or as a lovely memory.
A walk through the dunes with a photo shoot will last approximately two to three hours and end at the Riu hotels. There, you can take a bus / taxi back to Corralejo city center, walk back, or stay and continue your day at one of the most beautiful beaches in northern Fuerteventura, with crystal turquoise waters.

A Full-day Trip to Explore Fuerteventura’s Highlights

After picking you up from your accommodation, we’ll begin our journey through the heart of Fuerteventura, uncovering its cultural treasures and natural beauty. First we’ll drive past the sacred mountain of Tindaya, and you’ll learn why it’s considered one of the island’s most important and mysterious places, and is the only mountain on the island that is not allowed to climb. Soon after, you’ll stop at the iconic windmill of Tefía – a picture-perfect spot and a lovely glimpse into traditional island life.
From there, we’ll head to Los Molinos, a sleepy fishing village where time seems to slow down. You’ll stroll through its cluster of simple, whitewashed houses, soaking in the peaceful atmosphere.
Next, we’ll reach a breathtaking viewpoint above Betancuria, where you’ll enjoy sweeping views of northern Fuerteventura and meet the impressive monuments to the ancient Guanche brothers – kings. You’ll then descend into Betancuria, once the capital of both Fuerteventura and the Canary Islands. This beautifully preserved town invites us to wander its narrow streets, visit the charming old convent, and (if it’s not a Sunday or Monday) explore the archaeological museum. You’ll also have some free time to enjoy a coffee or grab a bite in one of the vibrant local cafés.
Afterwards, we’ll head further south to Vega de Río Palmas, the start of one of the island’s prettiest short hikes. We’ll walk to a white chapel nestled in the hills, with stunning views over a dramatic gorge around you. Your journey continues to Ajuy, a coastal village known for its black sand beach and famous sea caves. You’ll have plenty of time to explore both before your final stop. To close the day, we’ll visit a local Aloe Vera farm, where you’ll learn about this healing plant, test natural products, and will have an opportunity to buy some favorites to take home. From there, you’ll head back to your hotel – full of stories, fresh air, and the island’s unique spirit.

A Half-day tour of Northern Fuerteventura

I’ll pick you up from your accommodation and we’ll begin our adventure with a visit to Lajares – a charming and trendy inland village nestled between Corralejo and El Cotillo, that you’ve already met. Known for its laid-back vibe, artisan shops, and cozy cafés, Lajares is perfect for a short stroll and a coffee before we continue. From there, we’ll take a short off-road drive to one of Fuerteventura’s best-kept secrets – a hidden spot you’ll love. Expect beautiful views and a little touch of adventure!
Next, we’ll head west to the coastal gem of El Cotillo, a picturesque former fishing village. Our first stop is the lighthouse and the nearby crystal-clear lagoons, where – if the weather’s on your side – you’ll have the chance for a refreshing swim. After that, we’ll explore El Cotillo’s old town, where you’ll have time to wander on your own or grab a bite to eat. I will show you a few must-see spots, like the stunning sandy beaches just south of the town center, which count as a real highlight.
On your way back, we’ll pass through La Oliva, once the island’s capital, and the lovely village of Villaverde, before returning to your accommodation in the afternoon.

YOUR HOSTS:

  • Jakica: After many years of solo travel, I fell in love with Fuerteventura and made it my new home. The more I learned about this extraordinary island and its hidden, often very wild places, the more inspired I became to share this raw natural beauty and all I’ve learned about this remarkable place. After studying tourism and, later, specializing in eco-tourism, I’m now organizing active holidays and daily trips for conscious travelers who love to go beyond the most popular and mainstream places to find the real gems. You can find more about me and my trips, things to do and see, itineraries, and much other information about Fuerteventura on this website.
  • Tjasa: Tjasa has trained in dynamic vinyasa, hatha, and yin yoga. She teaches gentle flow movement classes, yin yoga, breath awareness, and mindfulness meditation. Additionally, Tjasa is a nature and lifestyle photographer specializing in yoga photography and an ongoing student of yin yoga and a holistic approach to wellbeing. She’ll host your beach morning yoga classes and join us for the dunes photoshoot.

ABOUT CORRALEJO:

Corralejo, located on the northern tip of Fuerteventura, is a vibrant seaside town known for its lively atmosphere. Famous for the Corralejo Natural Park, with its sprawling sand dunes and clear turquoise waters, it’s a paradise for beach lovers and water sports enthusiasts. The town offers a mix of traditional Canarian charm and modern amenities, with plenty of bars, restaurants, and shops to explore. Visitors can enjoy various activities like windsurfing, boat trips to Lobos Island, or simply relaxing on the pristine beaches, making Corralejo a must-visit destination on Fuerteventura.

HOW TO GET TO FUERTEVENTURA:

  • Fuerteventura: The most common and widely used way to get to Fuerteventura is by flying directly to Fuerteventura Airport (FUE). After booking, I’ll give you the shuttle bus ticket and instructions for finding the bus to Corralejo. Fuerteventura’s airport is relatively small, which makes navigating it easy. The return shuttle bus ticket is also included in the price.
  • Lanzarote: The closest island worth checking the tickets to and from is Lanzarote (ACE). Please remember that you’ll need to take a bus from the airport to Playa Blanca in the south of the island and an approximately 30-40 minute ferry across to Corralejo, Fuerteventura, where you’ll be staying. It would be best if you did not land later than 4-5 p.m. to catch a bus and the last ferry (at 8 p.m.).
  • Maybe you’ll wish to go island-hopping before or after our Active hiking holidays in Fuerteventura – in this case, you can fly to whichever Canary Island catches your attention (they’re all incredibly beautiful and very diverse) and then take one of the short flights between the islands. We recommend checking the local Canary Islands company, Binter Canarias. There are direct flights to Fuerteventura from/to Gran Canaria and Tenerife.

ABOUT ME
Jakica Jesih

My name is Jakica Jesih, and I come from Slovenia. After years of traveling, mainly as a solo traveler, I fell in love with Fuerteventura and made it my new home. The more I learned about this extraordinary island and its hidden, often very wild places, the more inspired I became by the beautiful connection between its vast emptiness and the powerful elements that make it so unique. I’m very excited to share this raw natural beauty and all I’ve learned about this remarkable place. On this page, you’ll find the information and tips you might find inspiring and helpful, as well as some of my services – guided tours and consulting if you have specific questions about Fuerteventura.

For more info and valuable tips, please check the website or/and get in touch at jakica@siol.net or DM me on Instagram @jakionfuerte. I’ll be happy to share.

Welcome, and please, be a conscious traveler. Although it might look rough and wild, this island is also very fragile, exposed to elements and forces of nature that create so much beauty for us to enjoy but also take their toll. Let’s not add to that. Let’s just make memories, take photos, leave footprints – and nothing else.
